Gerry Cardle has been living the good life working for The Family as the head of the death lottery. Each week folks are put to death to keep the optimum number within the dome. Gerry’s position made him exempt from the death lottery until now. He has 7 days to say his goodbyes and get his affairs in order.
In a panic Gerry goes off the grid and into the world outside of the dome with the help of Gabriel and Petal, both sophisticated, underground hackers. He discovers that an evil artificial intelligence has infiltrated the dome’s mainframe. And, along the way he finds out the truth behind The Family.
Barnes’ first book in the Code Breakers series, Alpha is a mixture of The Matrix and Mad Max. It’s a futurist tale set in the year 2153. The world has suffered a cataclysm leaving most of the land inhabitable due to radiation poisoning. The Family created a domed city that provides everything its citizens need to lead a normal life. Everyone has a port built into their bodies in which to connect into the internet along with other cybernetic enhancements.
The story ebbs and flows nicely and keeps you entertained. The characters are somewhat gritty and steampunk. There were a number of areas that could have been explored a bit more and left you without answers. Overall, it was a good read. I recommend that you go back & read the prequel first. 4 out of 5 stars.
