Our story picks up immediately where Hinkens‘ first book in The Underground Series, Immurement, ended. Sixteen year old Derry Connelly is determined to return to the Craniopolis and end the evil human experimentation and cloning being forced upon captured Undergrounders. Her goal also includes finding out if her brother, Owen, is truly dead. But, she cannot go it alone. Will she persuade the Rogues to join forces with what is left of the Council? And, what will she find when she travels to Shoshane City which was destroyed in the meltdown?
Hinkens’ second novel in The Underground Series, Embattlement, starts off a little slow. Once you get past the first few chapters it takes off and never stops. There is a host of new characters mixed in with the old; and, they bring a lot to the table. Derry’s character struggles with her new role as leader and balancing that with her feelings for Sven.
The ending to this book really surprised me. And, that has not happened in a long time. It was one of those “Oh, sh*t!” in a bad way cliffhanger endings. I loved it! There is no way I will miss reading the next book.
