Rick Carpenter is a paranormal romance author who loves the outdoors and camping. He is a loner by choice until Tina and her German shepherd, Opus, find their way into his life. With all the unrest in the months leading up to the 2016 presidential election Rick feels more now than ever that he needs to establish a bug out location and seriously start prepping. The small town he chooses has its own set of problems that somehow seem to spill over onto Rick.
Craven’s novel, One Man’s Opus: A Survival and Preparedness Story, is told from Rick’s point of view. The tale is of one man’s journey into the world of prepping mixed with a romance. It is a sweet story with some tense moments.
The reason I cannot give this a 5-star review is that it is listed as post-apocalyptic and I never read anything that indicated that the SHTF. Sure, rioting and other bad things were happening near where he lived but nothing on an apocalyptic scale. They were all short-lived and faded quickly into the background. I’m not even sure I’d call it a survival story – maybe, a true crime story mixed in to give it a life-threatening appeal.
It is still a good read and I would recommend it.
4 out of 5 stars.
