Cavvy Rides Again

Standard

Bindweed Highway cover

Cavatica Weller and her sisters are off in their ever continuing quest to fight the founder of ARK, Tiberius Hoyt and expose his treachery. Not only has he been bioengineering super soldiers, but he also has the cure for the sterility problem. But, first, they must try and save Micaiah, Hoyt’s son, and Pilate, their friend, and a priest from the clutches of ARK’s Praetor Edger and her army.

Ritchey’s fourth novel The Juniper Wars series, Bindweed Highway delivers a fast paced, high octane, steampunk western. There is no lack of action. It is told from Cavvy’s point of view with her own brand of reflection.

I thoroughly love this series and was not disappointed. And, neither will you be.

On The Road Again

Standard

Thistle Inferno cover

Cavatica Weller and her sisters surprised the world when they moved three thousand head of cattle across the Juniper. Notoriously famous for their wild ways, they soon find themselves on the run, cast as outlaws, before they can collect payment. With them is the most sought after boy alive, Micah Hoyt, the son of the richest man on Earth. His father, Tiberius “Tibbs” Hoyt, is the president and CEO of the American Reproduction Knowledge Initiative, otherwise known as the ARK.

Micah’s father created an army to find him and kill anyone with knowledge of his existence. Seems Micah is in possession of data that reveals a cure for the sterility that has plagued mankind for many decades. ARK would be doomed if the cure was ever released.

Along with the conflicted priest, Father Pilate, the group has captured and subdued Rachel Vixx. She is the last of the Vixx sisters, a group of genetically engineered super soldiers. This ragtag group sets off back into the Juniper in hopes of evading capture and returning home to Burlington. What they didn’t expect was to come across an entire city of men blocking their travels.

Ritchey’s third novel in The Juniper Wars series, Thistle Inferno, is an exciting thrill ride with the Weller sisters at the helm. This steampunk Western does an excellent job of mixing old world technology with desperation inspired ingenuity. Electronics do not work in the Juniper, but steam-power does.

I thought this would be the last book in the series as I was expecting it to be a trilogy like so many authors are prone to. Thankfully, the story will continue. Hopefully, we will get to see if Rachel will stay loyal to the Wellers.

I received this book for free from the author for review consideration. This in no way affected my opinion of the book, or the content of my review.

A Sci-fi Western

Killdeer Winds ARC Cover

This book is expected to be released on September 15, 2016.

Cavatica Weller and her sisters continue their trek across the Juniper driving their cattle to market in order to save their ranch. The trip is wrought with marauding land baronesses and harsh weather, along with a group of super soldiers desperate to capture Micaiah, a viable young man in hiding. Will the Weller girls be able to keep their herd intact, stay alive, and help Micaiah in his quest? Or, will Micaiah’s secrets doom them all?

Ritchey’s second installment in The Juniper Wars series, Killdeer Winds, is even more exciting than the first. There are shootouts, family feuds, a broken love triangle, redemption, and personal growth in this wild west environment. The juxtaposition of 18th century living with 21st century technology captures vividly how unique this story is. This world Ritchey has created comes to life with such colorful characters as a doctor turned sniper through the use of drugs, a Catholic priest who smokes cigars and shoots calling out the Gospels, and a gun slinger that trained as a circus performer.

There is so much to like about this series that I can’t begin to put it all in one review.

The Futuristic Wild West

Standard

Dandelion Iron Cover

Dandelion Iron will be released on April 11, 2016. You can pre-order it now through Amazon.

Cavatica Weller is attending a boarding school in Cleveland to become an electrical engineer while family is back in Burlington, Colorado running the ranch. She’s from the Juniper, an area encompassing five states, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana, along with parts of the surrounding states. During the Sino-American War the Chinese launched an EMP over Yellowstone causing the area to forever be without electricity. This same war caused sterility in 90% of all males.

When Cavvy’s mother dies, she is taken home by her sister, Wren, to aid in a cattle drive to save the ranch from foreclosure. Traveling through the Juniper takes you back to a time where land barons fight one another for control, outlaws are everywhere, and a good gun, a good horse, and hard living are the norm. At age sixteen, Cavvy has to grow up quickly and help keep her family alive. Will she live up to the challenge, especially after a viable boy joins their group?

Ritchey’s first book in The Juniper Wars series, Dandelion Iron, is a refreshing, fast-paced, post-apocalyptic novel. The characters are very well developed and quite diverse. The setting is described so vividly that you feel as though you are actually there. Being a young adult novel, it has some teenage angst and romance thrown into the mix. 5 out of 5 stars.
